Watch out: many premium cards punish fuel spend

Fuel is a penalty category on many premium UAE cards — earning as little as a tenth of the normal rate or excluded from rewards entirely. A dedicated everyday card for the pump often out-earns a flagship travel card there.

If you commute daily, check ride-hailing and Salik/Nol top-ups too — they often code as transport or government services with their own rates and exclusions.

Frequently asked questions

The Mashreq Cashback Card pays 2% at fuel stations — most premium cards earn far less there, so a dedicated everyday card wins at the pump.

Fuel has thin merchant margins, so banks classify it as a penalty category — some premium co-brands earn under 10% of their normal rate on it.

Often they code as government services, which many cards exclude — check the exclusion list before topping up large amounts.

How we chose these cards

Yajool's editors score every UAE card on the same four pillars — rewards value, travel benefits, fees & costs, and eligibility. Category winners are re-checked monthly against current public offers.
